WHAT IS TMJ/TMD?

TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint, more commonly known as the jaw joint. TMD stands for Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction and refers to a disorder of the jaw joint. Some of the signs and symptoms of TMD include the following:

  • Fatigue in your head and neck muscles.
  • Difficulty chewing.
  • Bite issues.
  • Facial swelling.
  • Chronic headaches or migraines.
  • Dizziness.
  • Ringing in your ears.
  • Earaches.
  • Your jaw clicks, pops, or grinds when you open and close your mouth.
  • Chronic pain in your head, neck, jaw, mouth, face, and/or shoulders.

These symptoms can interfere with your daily activities, making your TMD so much more than a health concern.

WHAT CAUSES TMD?

There are many factors that can cause TMD. Bruxism, which is teeth grinding and clenching, is one common cause. Some people grind or clench their teeth while they sleep or in stressful moments, which is one reason why stress is often considered a contributing factor to TMD.

There are other reasons you may suffer from TMD. Other common causes include bite misalignment, injury, or tooth loss. Whatever the cause of your TMD, we are here to help you. We want to treat your TMD, so you can get back to your everyday life!
